What is Air Guitar?

air guitar / ɛər gɪˈtɑr / n. the act of pretending to play guitar, consisting of an exaggerated strumming motion and often coupled with loud singing or lip-synching.

Air guitars are familiar in shape to normal guitars, with the exception that they are made exclusively out of air. Generally most Air guitars have 6 strings but the occasional 12 string axe has been spotted. By and large, electric Air Guitars are most popular but there has been a recent resurgence of the acoustic variety.

Proper use of the Air Guitar

Upon receiving your first Air guitar, proper instruction in the methods of tuning is suggested. Frequent tuning is recommended as mechanical failures can occur from improper tuning during play. Once your axe is in tune, it is quite common to plug it right into an amp. We deter the novice air guitarist from this. Get to know your amp, play around and see what varying effects can be accomplished from simple adjustments to the settings. Once you are familiar with the amp, plug it in and gently begin to create sound. WARNING, just because it is made of air DOES NOT mean that you cannot experience severe hearing loss if played to loudly. Once you get the basic hang of your instrument, the possibilities are endless. Pull out the old forgotten pair of bicycle shorts, grease back that slightly out of style hair do and declare your presence as a rock god.

History of Air Guitar World Championships

In 1996, the first Air Guitar World Championships were held in Oulu in 1996. Over the past decade, organized Air Guitar competitions have grown into an international network of national championships. The AGWC network of participating countries has grown to over 13 worldwide. Each member of the AGWC network abide by the same rules and principles. Every year, the best of the best from each of these countries competes to win their own national championships and then on to Finland for a chance to be crowned the world champion.

Since the inception of the Championships, an ideology of peace was at the forefront of the organizers minds. The logic behind the thinking is that a person playing the Air Guitar cannot simultaneously be causing harm to others. They thought that if Air Guitar was being played by everyone across the world there could be no war or crime, only peace.
